I Hope You Dance

I started my dance class last night at Northwestern University- 3 hours of going back to one of my earliest inclinations. We did basic merengue and salsa for a start and it’s great to discover that I still have the move and haven’t lost my rhythm.

It’s the advanced Salsa that had me thinking – I’m not really good at dancing with a partner, I get entangled and lose the rhythm; unable to guide my partner through the dance. To be profound about it, I think it has something to do with my being unattached living a solitary life: I’m may be good at dancing the rhythms of my life, but I still have to learn the dance steps of a life with a partner. The dance class reconnected me to my rhythm, it reawakened my dormant muscles for the dance and taught me a new lesson: it is good to dance to the music of life and share it with a partner like in the advanced Salsa – I’m a failure on that area for now.

 I Hope you Dance

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder

You get your fill to eat

But always keep that hunger

May you never take one single breath for granted

God forbid love ever leave you empty handed

I hope you still feel small

When you stand by the ocean

Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens

Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance

I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance

Never settle for the path of least resistance

Living might mean taking chances

But they’re worth taking

Lovin’ might be a mistake

But it’s worth making

Don’t let some hell bent heart

Leave you bitter

When you come close to selling out

Reconsider

Give the heavens above

More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance

(Time is a real and constant motion always)

I hope you dance

(Rolling us along)

I hope you dance

(Tell me who)

I hope you dance

(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)

(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small

When you stand by the ocean

Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens

Promise me you’ll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

Dance

I hope you dance

I hope you dance

(Time is a real and constant motion always)

I hope you dance

(Rolling us along)

I hope you dance

(Tell me who)

(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)

I hope you dance

(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who)

I hope you dance

(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)

(Where those years have gone)

(One of my favorite songs with great lyrics)

I wish you well.

  1. dear jeques,

i am amazed how you constantly evolving into being a better person as you are. now you are into dancing. this is one of the directions i have accepted as not my piece of cake. just be the best dancer as you are, and as an artist, you had that great edge. poetry and art has taught you how to convey emotions and feeling that will reveal through your body movements. this in a way, is an art in motion.

keep on dancing jeques, who knows, someday i can play you some piano pieces and you’ll dance onstage, right?

    cheers,
    marvin
