Taming This Tyke's Voice Since 2007

My Genesis

~

I delight watching things from their outset,

I am soothe to see the genesis of things.

They remind me of the child, the curious eyes

Ever sparkling within.

I see beauty in simpleness of anything even at their lowly outset,

For they possess the genuine truth of precious purity.

They remind me of my beginnings

Like the water glorybinds(kangkong) growing wild in the marshes,

They bring back memories of the backyards

Of some houses I lived as a child.

Water glorybind, river spinach, swamp cabbage, whatever name you call it, for me its "Tangkong" Pencil, pen and ink on paper by Jeques B. Jamora, 2010

In some quiet afternoons during my untamed moments,

I would sit motionless in a corner facing the swamp in our backyard

Listening to the soothing sounds, the slightest of movements

In the still water at one o’clock

When the world in my young mind

Takes a nap with my mother on her siesta.

I would sneak out of the house through the backdoor

To celebrate the joy of my earliest  found solitude

In the company of nature ~

Befriending the dragonflies hovering over my head,

The birds nestling in the reeds,

The snails petiently taking thier journeys from one rock to the next,

While my mind quietly travels to the unknown future

Interrupted by occasional sightings of the gourami

That stir the still water creating tiny ripples on the surface.

But the highlight of the afternoon is the rare sighting of the mudfish(dalag)

Making that splash and swashing sound and wild movements

In the dense growth of the water glorybinds as it swims back to the bushes of reeds,

Where the water of the marshes is knee deep and the herons(tagak) nest.

That magical moment of brief beautiful chaos tickles purest joy of childhood madness.

Cherished memories from my genesis ~

My earliest form of entertainment: my humble version of television,

Or a theatre; watching a movie or a concert ~ my idea of a grand show

Happening in our backyard in an atypic stage, in a silverscreen of water glorybinds

Where the dragonflies, the frogs, the birds, the gourami, the snails, the herons, the mudfish

Are the stars, and I, their sole audience.

The show ends with the voice of my mother calling my name at four o’clock.

That’s when the curtains drop,

The world wakes up,

As I walk back home to the door of my genesis.

"The Dragonfly and I"

    • Thanks for coming back and leaving my nook with such a shower of nice words.

When I write about childhood, like when I paint, I go back to the place and time and i become the child again, to live the moment even just in words, even just in the splashes of colors on the canvas.

      Thanks for visiting my webnook.

      I wish you well.

    • Dragonfly for me is metaphor to the dreams we chase in life. It’s also a favorite subject for my painting.

      Thanks for visiting my webnook.

      I wish you well.

    • Thanks for coming back. As grown up, the memories of outdoors from my childhood constantly draw me out. I feel a certain cleansing when I’m in an open space.

  4. a truly magical place woven into these childhood realities…the words just sort of transport you allowing the reader the joy of experiencing all of the sights and sounds..the painting is beautiful, I must admit I really don’t know anything about art but I can see the depth of the painting which draws the eye past the shadows underneath the leaves into a world of possibilities..just enjoyed everything about this..from the beginning!

    • Your take of my drawing is well written and succeed illustrate in words what it is all about. The water glorybind serves as the backdrop, the “silverscreen” to my earliest memory of entertainment as showcased in the poem. Indeed, though the obvious figures in the drawing highlights the water glorybind the real soul to the drawing are the shadows in the water where the possibility of surprises appear summoning my memories of the marshes as a child.

Now that I am grown up, that same thing remains my metaphor to possibilities. The surprises comes not from the obvious in front of me, but from the things that I draw out of nothingness, from its onset like in my genesis.

      I wish you well.

  9. jeques,

there are a lot of images of home here. and the way you showcase them in this poem are absolutely splendid like a theatrical treat. i like the way you highlight the oriental life in our dear “panay island”. there are so many twist here worth mentioning, unpredictably colorful and simply refreshing.

i like the way you tackle about you being the spectator to that grand display of nature. i like the way you describe your solitude of the moment being with the nature and your tender naps on your mother’s lap. i like the sight of kangkong (my favorite), gourami, tagak, dalag (which i am not eating), and most of all-dragonfly (tutubi). these images made me feel just like i want to comeback to our motherland and spent few days of frolicking in its beauty.

all in all, this a powerful descriptive poem in a hopeful tone and refreshing narrative. a creative trademark that belongs only to you. thanks for taking me into that wonderful journey to nature.

    best of times,
    marvin

    • Marvin,

It’s only barely 3 months since my last vacation but I wish I’m home again.

During my recent home-coming, I managed to find time to draw many elements from home which I post here with my writings like the “Kangkong” in this poem. They are now part of my “Traveler’s Soliloquies collection.
That’s my version of drafting. I would get my subject from the garden that strum a cord in my heart – leaves, flowers, vines name it then draw them like making a portrait and composing my poem in my head in the process. So most of the poems I am posting now are drawings and the poetry drafts are stored in my head that I put on the pages while I color them now that I’m back in chicago

We could never really have enough time, I wish I could have stayed longer to draw the “Kamote,” that also brings back memories. I also have pictures taken like the “Gabi,” and more that soon will grace my web nook.

I’m glad my words brought you home.

      I wish you well.

    • Emmanuel,

It’s great to know the poem brought you back to a place in time showered by your childhood memories. I feel double-rewarded re-living mine and knowing that some people share the fun with me.

      I wish you well.
