Underneath Your Sheltering Canopy

~

Under your sheltering canopy

In the safety of your embrace

Beneath your reassuring grip

Certainty returns.

Like the shadow of the clouds

Passing by on a midday.

Such fleeting moments

Of alternating shadow and light:

Long absence,

Brief presence,

And the silent anticipations in between

Fuel hope, keep the heart pounding

To reach another waiting shade

Along the way

To rest

Underneath your sheltering canopy.

"Ethan" is my Bonsai tree I planted when I was 13, he is now 24 years old.

"Portrait of Ethan" Pencil, ink and pen on paper by Jeques B. Jamora, 2010 ("Ethan" is my Bonsai tree I planted when I was 13, he is now 24 years old).

His Name Is Ethan

His name is Ethan Yes, I gave him a name and his name is Ethan.

I was called once to priesthood when I was in highschool, but I was expelled from the seminary after a year. Many are called, they said, but only a few are chosen; I was not. It was my first taste of rejection, and it was how my story with Ethan started.

His name is ethan I mentioned the seminary because I planted Ethan the summer after I was kicked out. I was 13 years old with wings broken. Nobody really cared to listen to my side of the story especially my father. My mother, as always, was there to console me ~ in silence. I was left alone in the corner to leak my own wound to heal. At that lowest point of my life, for a reason that I’m just beginning to understand now, God sent me Ethan to care. I always had some loner tendencies as a kid. That summer and years after that I became withdrawn, misunderstood. Gone was the child full of life, I fell down so low I never thought I could ever rise again.

    • My poems though drawn from personal experiences that’s not necessarily about love uses romance to dress my thoughts. I aspire to bring my poetry to pop culture, I thought romance is still the most highly read subject in poetry.

      Thanks for visiting my webnook.

    • It may not be necessarily in another person, it could be a place, or thing. For this poem, it’s my Bonsai, Ethan.

  8. sweet embrace! it sounds like these lovers are separated either by distance or by legalities. ;D i love ethan’s portrait!

you’ll only get to fully appreciate acceptance if you experienced rejection. after reaching rock bottom, there is only one direction left- UP. i’m sure that whenever you look back now, you realize and understand that, that lowest moment turned out to be a blessing in disguise. =)

    • Don’t be misslead by how I dressed this poem with romance, its a simple poem I wrote about my bonsai ethan at home.

    • When we write poetry, we can’t help but lay ourselves on the page to the extent of becoming philosophycal for our writings just reflect who we are.

  19. jeques,

the beauty of this poem is unravelling in between great pauses of clouds. i can see the picture in my mind of someone who watches the clouds go by. someone who never regrets about drought or the sudden rain. but someone who hopes that between these occurences are perfect opportunities to remember the past and compare the circumstances of today, which will culminate into eventual unfolding of the sunrise of the future. your latter will be definitely greater than the rest, if you would only believe.

    best of times,
    marvin

    • I used to love lying on the hay, or the grass, or in our terrace in a midday watching the moving clouds above me creating that light and shadow effect as it cover and uncover the sun. This poem conjure that memory and it ressonates to the memory of my Bonsai tree, Ethan and the brief presence and long absence we had in each other’s life from the time I left home.

I know among my readers, it is you who understands where my thoughts are coming the clearest for you have followed my writings well.

      I can’t thank you enough.

      I wish you well.
